Opening Hours

We are open weekdays in the evenings from 6.30pm to dusk. We are closed during the day from Mondays to Fridays.

At weekends we are open from 10.30am to dusk both days.

Boarding in and out is after 6.30 each weekday evening and after 11am at weekends.

Rehomes

We know that circumstances change and from time to time we get rehome chickens in. Our policy is to take hens in free and we rehome them at £5 to the new owner to cover their keep here. Unfortunately we get an overriding number of cockerels, and whilst we don't charge the new owners for them, they are usually here for a long time. We therefore charge £5 to take in a cockerel to cover our costs.

Contact us from the tab below if you are interested in taking some rehome hens or a cockerel for free, or need to find a new home for your hens.

Chickenalia

By popular demand we now have a dedicated site to all the wonderful things chicken related. You can browse and order online and pay with Paypal, or shop at the farm when you come over.

Weaners available in September

We have Gloucester Old Spot piglings born on 1 July. Our piglings are weaned at 8 weeks and are then ready to go to their new homes. At 8 weeks old they are £50.

Contact us by email to alison@spottypiggies.co.uk or from the Contact button at the bottom of the page to reserve them. They are popular, so reserving one (or two or three) is best if you can.

Testimonials

29th Sep 2009

Hi Alison

Just wanted to thank you for an excellent course on Sunday.

I have learnt so much, and the chance to handle the chickens and have a go at wing clipping which can be nerve-wrecking for a first timer has instilled so much more confidence.

I can't now wait to own some chickens for myself and look forward to dealing with you again in the future.

Any aspiring chicken keeper should attend this course!

Best wishes for your ongoing success.

Please feel free to use this testimonial.

Kind Regards

Samantha Tanner

Feeding Chickens

It is important that your chickens have a balanced diet. They will fill up on tasty scraps and corn first, if given the opportunity, so the trick is to make the nutritious food freely available and to restrict the bulky food. A balanced diet, as for humans, consists of proteins, carbohydrate, fats, minerals, vitamins and water.

The main food to give your chickens is layers pellets and or layers mash.

Feeders & Drinkers

Chick Drinker £3

Chicks are attracted to red, so this red based drinker is ideal for chicks. It has a shallow rim, only allowing a small amount of water in at a time and thus avoiding the risk of the chicks drowning. When introducing the chicks to their new home after the incubator, hold their head gently and dip their beak into the water to introduce them to it.

Chick Feeder £3

Chicks are attracted to red, so this feeder is ideal for chicks. The base stops the chicks getting into the food and scratching it out. They can only get their heads in to eat the food with no wastage.

Economy Pellet Feeder £4.50

This pellet feeder is not as robust as the more expensive types, but does the job just as well. It will feed up to 5 hens.

Red & White Feeder 1kg £2, 3kg £6.50, 6kg £10

These are a new range of feeder and are well made. These are our most popular range and there will be one to suit your size of flock.

3kg Green & White Feeder £9.75

The chickens cannot get into the feeder to scratch, so the food is not wasted by being scratched on the floor. This size feeder will feed up to 6 hens.

15kg White Feeder Feeder £25

This large feeder will feed up to 10 hens very easily.

4l Green & White Drinker with legs £9.50

This very practical plastic drinker is suitable for up to 6 chickens. It has foldaway legs, so can stand on a platform or use the legs to stand it on the ground. This helps prevent mud and dirt bouncing into the rim of the drinker when it rains. It has a handle for carrying and can be hung from the handle as well.

9l Drinker £12

This is an excellent drinker which is suitable for up to 10 chickens.

Grit Feeder £3.50

This handy plastic feeder is ideal for grit. The lid is removable, but is tight fitting when it is clicked on.

Drinker/Feeder Stands £7

These drinker or feeder stands are perfect for keeping your food station out of the mud. The wide brim means that mud does not get splashed up and so protects the food and water. If you are filling the drinker from a watering can or hose pipe the stands are very useful for holding the drinker upside down ready to be filled. This is a more civilised alternative to holding the top between your feet!

Table for Food Station £9

Children's plastic play tables are ideal to use as a rain proof roof over your food station. Tables are green, not blue as in the picture.

Chicken Keeper Book

Chicken Keeping is a joy. You will have a constant supply of the most yummy eggs you have ever had and the fun of watching your hen’s personalities develop as they go about their day, chatting to each other whilst looking for tasty morsels in the ground. I want to encourage every one who is considering keeping a few chickens in the garden to take the plunge and go for it. You will be amazed at how friendly and tame the chickens become and how much fun they are to have around.

I originally wrote this book to accompany the Chicken Keeper courses I run, but it has now grown to a point where it has become a book in its own right and I hope it will both inspire you to order your hen house now and reassure you that you will be able to cope with all eventualities in this most rewarding of hobbies.

The book is £15 with free P&P or collect from Hook Farm for Alison to personalise it to you. If ordering for postage, please send a cheque, payable to Hook Farm Chickens, to Hook Farm, London Rd, Hook RG27 9EQ.
